After months of speculation that teased and taunted the Internet, Oreo maker Nabisco has finally confirmed that the mythical, cake-inspired red velvet Oreo will be hitting store shelves next month in time for Valentine’s Day, the season of all things red, white and heart-shaped.

The red velvet cookies are made with red-dyed chocolate cookie wafers that sandwich a cream cheese-flavoured crème filling.

The cookies will launch across the US February 2 for six to eight weeks.

Early reviews of the red velvet cookies are mixed from taste testers at People.com and Today.com, with some calling it overly sweet, and others appreciating the novelty factor.

Impatient to try? Oreo is sending free samples to 20,250 people who register on the site by tomorrow.

Over the past years, Oreos have come in all shades and flavours, including candy cane, white fudge, lemon twist, creamsicle, “spring” and “summer”. — AFP-Relaxnews
