MEXICO CITY, Jan 7 ― An organic, handcrafted mezcal praised for expressing the terroir of Mexico has been named the top bar brand in a poll that solicited the input of the best bartenders around the world.
Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal topped the World’s 50 Best Bar Brands report 2015, which polled 100 of the top bartenders around the world.
Mixologists from their sister ranking, the World’s 50 Best Bars, were asked to name the best-selling and top-trending brands behind their bars.
In addition to 38 respondents from the top 50 list, editors also solicited the input of nominees who made the top 100 list.
Founded in 1995, Del Maguey is 100 per cent certified organic and handcrafted by local producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, who employ the same ancient, indigenous techniques used before the Spanish conquest.
“Bartenders tell us they love the range’s multitude of single-village mezcals and different agave types, and are happy to take them down naked or chasing a beer,” write editors of the World’s 50 Best Bar Brands.
Del Maguey managed to trump bigger well-established brands like Tanqueray and Beefeater Gins which round out the top three spots.
Rum and gin were the most popular spirits on the top 10 list, each taking four spots.
The majority of respondents hailed from bars in Europe (52 per cent) followed by North America (20 per cent) and Asia (13 per cent).
