LONDON, Dec 25 — A Kickstarter project aims to resurrect the iconic ZX Spectrum in the form of an iOS-compatible Bluetooth keyboard. Designed for use with an iPad, the device would take on the same design as the ZX Spectrum and would even allow users to play some of the 10,000 compatible games that made the original computer legendary.

Produced from 1982 to 1990 by the British firm Sinclair Research, the ZX Spectrum was among the first personal computers to reach mainstream audiences in the UK. Today, a few nostalgic gadget lovers are attempting to revive this early computer by connecting a vintage keyboard to an iPad through Bluetooth, or to Apple TV through AirPlay.

Outlined in detail on Kickstarter, the project requires £60,000 (RM320,000) to get off the ground. If the fundraising campaign is a success, the ZX Spectrum Bluetooth will be sold for between £39.99 and £49.99 during 2014. Depending on the commercial success of the device, its creators could even develop versions compatible with Android or Windows tablets.

If the project becomes a reality, it would be compatible with a multitude of apps. Elite Systems, the company behind the project, already offers a few classic ZX Spectrum game apps on the App Store, allowing iPhone and iPad users to play “Barbarian,” “Cybernoid” and “Jack the Nipper.”
