SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 9 — How’d you like to become a hero or heroine in a city full of them, flying around the metropolis, fighting crime (or committing it) in a way that only the superpowered can?
The team behind “City of Titans” conspires to create that game, inspired by now-shuttered MMO “City of Heroes,” with a Kickstarter pitch that has broken through its US$320,000 (RM1 million) goal with nearly four weeks to go.
It’s for the fans, by the fans, and funded by fans, inspired by “City of Heroes” and the community that grew up around it, but with ambition enough to iterate upon the original concept.
For a fan project with admittedly professional ambitions, the team at Missing Worlds Media can draw on a staff of considerable technical expertise, with business executives, professional programmers, artists and authors among them.
Its closed beta is not due to start until May 2015 – the full game tracking for November that year – but already the majority of backers are weighing in at US$75 for one of the project’s more expensive funding tiers.
That’s a significant show of support, especially when access to the closed beta can be had for a comparatively paltry US$10.
A character creation app for Android devices is already secured, with an iOS version due once the campaign hits US$400,000, and at US$500,000 a Mac OSX build of the game to complement the Windows version already in development.
