KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — After completing his outing in the international badminton arena by winning the Hong Kong Open last Sunday, Datuk Lee Chong Wei has shifted his focus to end the year with local competitions.
Even though Chong Wei was told to rest after undergoing a tight international schedule, his commitment to the Petaling Jaya Badminton Club and to ensure he does not lose his touch, saw him in action at the on-going Purple League.
He easily defeated Kento Momota of Japan from the Ampang Jaya Badminton Club, 11-9, 11-10, 6-11 and 11-7 for a 3-1 victory in the men's first singles.
According to Chong Wei, he would only be playing at least four matches in the tournament to assist the team to collect points.
"In resting, it does not mean I will not be in action as I will also be training as well," he told reporters at Sports Arena Petaling Jaya, here.
Overall, Petaling Jaya BC beat Ampang Jaya BC 13-9 via the victory of the women's singles Cheung Ngan Yi who defeated Desiree Siow Hao Shan 3-0 and in men's doubles where Koo Kien Keat/Songphon subdued Chin Chuan Jue/Yoneda Ken 3-2.
In the men's second singles, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim lost 2-3 to Ronald Susilo while mixed doubles Vountus Indramawan Saniru/Woon Khe Wei lost 2-3 to Kuan Kam Chung/Shevon Lai Jemie.
Chong Wei, who is currently ranked third in the world and is well-placed to make his fourth appearance in the Olympics, said he would ensure his physical condition is not affected by any injuries while playing in local tournaments.
"My coaches Hendrawan and Tey Seu Bock will be selecting several tournaments for me to participate next year, from January to May. Maybe after that I will only be in action in two to three championships only," he said. — Bernama
