LOS ANGELES, Dec 26 — Around 70 new shows came to US TV in fall 2016. As series get ready to take a break over the Holiday period, here's a look at five of this season's new shows that proved the biggest hits with viewers.
Westworld
With 12 million viewers tuning in to watch this HBO show each week, from October 2 to December 4, the futuristic thriller from Jonathan Nolan and JJ Abrams certainly lived up to expectations. With figures like that, the series is the most successful new show on record for the premium channel.
These impressive ratings were topped with three Golden Globes nominations, including one in the prestigious “Best Television Series — Drama” category.
This is Us
This is the pleasant surprise among fall's new arrivals. Since it launched, September 20, the NBC show kept an average 14.3 million US viewers tuning in each week.
In fact, ratings have kept growing with each episode. That looks set to continue when the show returns, January 10, after the Holiday break. This is Us even won over critics, scooping three Golden Globes nominations.
Bull
This new CBS show boasts an average 17 million viewers each week — a score that few shows are capable of matching in the USA. The presence of Michael Weatherly — formerly Agent DiNozzo in NCIS — no doubt explains some the enthusiasm for this legal drama, which returns after its Holiday break, January 3.
Designated Survivor
Eagerly awaited by fans of Kiefer Sutherland, Designated Survivor didn't disappoint, with 14 million viewers for each episode. Although ratings dropped over the weeks, the ABC series is sure to stay on air until the end of its season.
Lethal Weapon
Agents Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh made a successful transition from big to small screen. The TV adaptation is drawing almost 10 million viewers per episode. After screening nine first episodes, September 21 to December 7, Fox has another nine in store from January 4. — AFP-Relaxnews
