MONTEVIDEO, Sept 12 — Video gaming’s latest “Game of Thrones” tribute is the least official but jolliest crossover yet – and it’s free.

The teensy, 68mb PC download “Game of Thrones: The 8 Bit Game” is rendered in a side-scrolling, 1990s retro style and sees Jon Snow get his adorably oversized head over that Wall.

Four characters in all are given a chapter each; Uruguay-based Spaniard Abel Alves told forum users at Westeros.org that he was considering a sequel that would contain another four characters and chapters.

Two licensed “Game of Thrones” tie-ins had been previously produced: “Game of Thrones” was a “Skyrim”-type adventure but was destined to struggle against its purebreed competitor, while “Game of Thrones: Genesis” innovated in the strategy genre, encouraging players to think in dynastic terms; both 2012 releases were produced by Parisian firm Cyanide.

Free of any commercial restrictions, Alves’s rendition of the George R.R. Martin franchise features chiptune remixes of the series’ main theme and comes out having more in common with “Alex Kidd” and “Wonder Boy” than with more modern interpretations of the franchise.
