PASIR GUDANG, June 13 — The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Service Department (Maqis) foiled an attempt to import about 740kg of buffalo meat worth RM 11,700 at the Pasir Gudang Port here yesterday.
Johor Maqis director Edie Putra Md Yusof said the meat was brought in from India in 37 boxes.
He said during an inspection Maqis officers found that the buffalo meat had their slaughter, manufacturing and expiry dates, including importer names, that were different from those stated on the halal certificate issued.
“This is an offence under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728) for providing misleading certificates or other documents.
“Maqis officers recorded the statement of a local shipping agent, who is in his 30s, as part of our investigations before he was released,” said Edie Putra in a statement today.
Under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, those convicted could face a maximum fine of RM50,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both.
Edie Putra said Maqis is always committed to carrying out enforcement at the country’s entrance points.
He said this is to ensure that the safety of agricultural products entering the country complies with the conditions and regulations set by the government.
