KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — After a false start, the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) today announced its Perak chief Mutalib Uthman will contest the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in Melaka under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner in the 15th general election.

Earlier this week, Mutalib made a false announcement that he will contest in Tapah, Perak — a seat that had been previously contested by PKR, one of the four component parties in the PH coalition in past elections.

“The nomination of Muda leaders in this election is in line with Muda's efforts to present leaders who are sensitive to the people's issues, active in service politics, and always focused on formulating fair and equitable policies for Malaysia.

“Muda's focus in GE15 this time is to ensure that Malaysia returns to being a developed and successful country,” the party said in a statement.

Mutalib will be up against incumbent Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and Barisan Nasional’s 36-year-old Abdul Hakim Abd Wahid.

Mas Ermieyati had won the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in GE14 as a BN candidate, beating PKR’s Datuk Sabirin Ja’afar and Nasir Othman from PAS.

But she later jumped to Bersatu in December 2018, which was at that time a PH component. The party withdrew from PH in early 2020, following the Sheraton Move.

Mutalib is Muda’s sixth and final candidate to be announced for the parliamentary election this year.

The other five Muda candidates are: president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman who will be defending his Muar, Johor seat; vice-president Lim Wei Jiet for Tanjung Piai, also in Johor; Danial Abdul Majeed for Kepala Batas in Penang; Siti Rahayu Baharin for Tanjong Karang in Selangor; and Shahrizal Denci in Kota Marudu, Sabah.
