KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Parti Amanah Negara today called on the Ministry of Education Ministry (MoE) to reconsider its proposed punishment against school teacher and activist Mohd Fadli Salleh for bringing up issues regarding the education system.

The party’s education and societal changes bureau chairman Datuk Hasan Bahrom said the punishment proposed for Mohd Fadli, known to the public as Cikgu Fadli, does not reflect a harmonious atmosphere between the management and the policymakers.

“The MoE should look into the opinion expressed by Cikgu Fadli and should take it seriously as it has an impact on the teaching and learning system as well as the achievement of the ministry through the ‘Sekolahku Sejahtera’ initiative,” said Hasan in a statement today.

He added that the MoE is expected to celebrate the freedom of all parties in expressing views and opinions and be a reflection of the construction of an education system that considers collectivity in any matter to create a mature, progressive and harmonious educational environment.

It was reported on Sinar Harian that Mohd Fadli had received a letter dated September 22 calling for disciplinary action to be taken against him for raising issues with the District Education Office (PPD) regarding the education system, school bags, subject syllabus, study time and the number of students in the class.

On Saturday, Mohd Fadli through his Facebook said that the action should not be taken against him as he has never been involved in any disciplinary problems or faced problems with students’ parents.

The Mathematics teacher at primary school SK (1) Gombak, also shared a photo of the letter dated September 22 that stated that he could be subject to disciplinary action, dismissal or demotion based on the three charges against him.

The charge was for uploading a post on Facebook about timetables and subjects taught in primary schools, uploading posts on Facebook about the subjects taught to Year One students and for conducting a Facebook live session to talk about the problems of education in Malaysia.

Education Minister Datuk Mohd Radzi Md Jidin had responded to the matter and said he would like to meet Mohd Fadli to understand further the topic at hand.

Mohd Fadli has in return questioned the late response by the education minister despite these issues being raised over a year ago.
