PETALING JAYA, May 17 — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has one million followers on Instagram.
Not many nonagenarians can claim this.
The 92-year-old prime minister reached the impressive figure in the span of two months since he first registered his Instagram account, giving millennials and social media influencers a run for their money.
Unlike the typical Instagram celebrity who regularly posts their outfits of the day, Dr Mahathir’s posts have mostly been about his travels with his spouse, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, which his followers find heartwarming and inspiring.
In a post, Dr Mahathir thanked those who followed him on social media, but cautioned the masses to use the platform carefully.
“Today, my Instagram account has reached 1 million followers. Thank you. Social media is an important platform for getting the right information as well as getting us closer together. Use it wisely,” he said.
The post has garnered 110,000 likes at the time of writing.
Another Instagram post that became a sensation was that of PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who posted an undated picture of her being kissed on the head by her father, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“It’s been some time since that kiss, papa. Allah SWT in All His Infinite Wisdom has granted us this homecoming. What better way to greet Ramadhan. A pardon based on a miscarriage of justice.
“A separation met with an eventual embrace. Live life based on principled conviction. I love you. We’ve got much to do. Many more injustices to fight against,” said caption.
The post, which was shared on the same day Anwar was released unconditionally from prison, had garnered over 170,000 likes at the time of writing.
