KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — The United States Department of State today congratulated Malaysia on its newly concluded 14th general election, which swept Pakatan Harapan to power.

Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said Malaysians from all parties, states and backgrounds participated in a hard-fought election campaign, and engaged the electoral process in large, peaceful numbers with great enthusiasm.

“We fully expect all institutions to carry out their functions and duties to produce and implement official results in accordance with the Federal Constitution and the will of the people,” she said in a statement.

Pakatan Harapan made national history when it obtained 122 seats in Parliament, thereby enabling it to form a majority government. Former ruling coalition BN which has held power for the past six decades trailed behind with 79 seats, followed by Pas with 18 seats.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was expected to be sworn in as the seventh Prime Minister today, however the Palace has since confirmed it will take place at a later date.

At 93 years of age, the former premier who served from 1981 to 2003 will be the oldest elected head of government in the world.
