KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — The Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) will be using its very own protective gear, known as i-Smart Tactical Vest (i-STV), for its personnel.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the i-STV,  designed by 10 officers and personnel from the Federal Reserve Unit’s U7 Group in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, was improved in terms of protection and safety.

He said the RMP had acquired the patent rights and planned to commercialise the product.

“The use of i-STV can reduce the costs of up to 70 per cent compared to the existing vest, which is priced at RM5,000 each.

“The (current) vests are normally imported from overseas and costs are very high. As such, this innovation will reduce the costs. It (i-STV) is lighter and less warm,” he said at the i-STV Copyright Handover Letter and Commercial Licencing Agreement signing ceremony in Bukit Aman here today.

The letter was signed between Mohamad Fuzi and a representative from the designing team, Supt (Rtd) Lee Swee Meng, while the agreement was signed between the IGP and TRB Defence Manufacturing Berhad executive chairman Datin Azizah Tuah.

Witnessing the ceremony was Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Fuzi said the force was having manpower issues making it difficult for them to monitor schools located within hotspot areas for crimes.

“We have very limited personnel for us to station them at schools... What we have now is school liaison officers nationwide but we will emphasise more on these hotspot schools,” he said.

Yesterday, a local daily reported that the Education Ministry would seek police assistance to monitor such schools to avoid crimes near the areas. — Bernama
