KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) is investigating yesterday’s fatal collision involving two factory buses near the Juru toll plaza.
Miros chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said he will be sending officers to the scene to determine the actual cause of event to prevent such tragedies.
“We are not looking at faulting the drivers or anyone in this case. We want to look at room for improvement to prevent the same incident from recurring.
“Miros views this accident seriously, just like all other accidents. We will despatch officers to the site to do the necessary work and prepare a report for the Transport Minister,” he was quoted as saying in The Star.
In the news report, Lee advised motorists to be wary during an emergency and to adopt proper safety measures during an incident as such to alert others on the road.
“Learn from this incident so that no more families lose their loved ones. Practise safe driving because every life is precious,” he was quoted as saying.
According to news reports, eight Indonesian women were killed and 42 others were injured from the incident when they were heading to work at the Sony EMCS Factory in Prai Industrial Estate.
Seberang Perai Tengah District police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid reportedly said the 5.50am crash happened when one of the buses rammed onto the other idle vehicle on the left side of the North-South Expressway towards Butterworth.
The idle bus was said to have experienced engine failure and had to pull over on the left side of the highway.
The two bus drivers, aged in their 30s and 40s, have been remanded for four days.
