KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — The much anticipated Employment Insurance System (EIS) Bill 2017 that was scheduled to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat today has been withdrawn.

It will be re-tabled for the first reading tomorrow instead, Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem confirmed.

“The Bill was withdrawn to enable a new EIS Bill 2017 to be tabled for first reading on October 24, 2017.

“This new Bill is expected to be tabled for a second reading on either October 25 or 26, 2017,” Riot said in a statement after informing the Dewan Rakyat of his decision to withdraw the Bill at the start of today’s meeting this morning.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to implement the EIS beginning January 2018.

The EIS Bill 2017 was among four Bills that had been deferred for debate at the last Dewan Rakyat meeting in August. The other three are: the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Amendment) Bill 2017, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (Amendment) Bill 2017 and the Stamp (Amendment) Bill 2017.

The EIS Bill seeks to create a safety fund to help retrenched workers with contribution by both employers and employees.
