'Run for National Unity' organisers lauded for focus on unity

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 11 — The Run for National Unity on Sept 16 has been given the thumbs up by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup. 

Expressing his support for the event organised by HELP University and Malay Mail, he said he was pleased the companies were working together to unite people and it was fitting that the event was held on Malaysia Day. 

“This is a good initiative by the private sector to bring Malaysians together. It will bring people together in the same place and encourage national unity,” he said.

Kurup was briefed on the run by HELP University president and vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Paul Chan and Ancom Bhd group managing director and Redberry chief executive officer Datuk Siew Ka Wei.  

Chan said national unity was crucial to ensure a better future for all Malaysians.

“Our run will be a win when we see participants of all races and religion take part and enjoy themselves together,” he said. 

“We are expecting up to 3,000 participants comprising students and also members of the public.”

Chan said proceeds from the run would be used to assist students further their tertiary education.

There are six categories — men’s open, women’s open, physically impaired, Muhibbah Group, family participation and corporate.

Run for National Unity will be flagged off at 7.30am at Padang Merbok for the men’s and women’s open, while the group run would begin at 7.40am, followed by the category for the disabled at 7.50am.

The men’s and women’s open will cover a distance of 7km, team events 5km, and the physically impaired run will be 3km.

The public may register personally at the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association office on the second floor of the Olympic Council of Malaysia building in Jalan Hang Jebat, and at the Department of Students’ Affairs at HELP University in Bukit Damansara.

The fee for both the men’s open and women’s open is RM50 for walk-in registrations and RM55 online. The fees for Muhibbah Group and family categories are RM150 for walk-in and RM165 online, and  corporate team fees are RM250 for walk-in and RM265 online.

There is no entry fee for physically challenged participants.

The closing date for registration is Sept 5.

Those who have successfully registered may collect their numbers and T-shirts from HELP University in Bukit Damansara from Sept 12 to 15 from 10am to 6pm.
