KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 ― The Jalur Gemilang flag at Dataran Merdeka here will be replaced more frequently while waiting for the outcome of a study on a better quality flag, said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz.
He said the flag would be replaced more frequently, with monthly changes compared to every two months previously.
"The decision does not have to be made in a hurry as it is still being discussed. For now, the existing contract will be continued.
"The current contractor, Reez Enterprise was appointed to manage the flag at Dataran Merdeka and the contract ends in June 2018," he told Bernama when contacted today.
Mhd Amin said the contract only involved the flag at the main post (100m high) and all the state flags at Dataran Merdeka.
"At the moment, we are still using the 'twinkle satin' material.
"However, City Hall is looking for more sturdy materials which are light and does not absorb water," he said.
Mhd Amin was commenting on a photograph of a torn Malaysian flag measuring about 18 metres long and nine metres wide at the Dataran Merdeka which went viral on the social media recently.
He said the flag was torn by strong winds and heavy rains last Wednesday and Thursday. ― Bernama
