SHAH ALAM, July 6 ― A robber’s bid to steal an automated teller machine (ATM) in Shah Alam this morning was foiled when the alarm was triggered.
Shah Alam police chief ACP Shafien Mamat explained that the suspect had hooked up a rope to an ATM at the CIMB Bank branch in Section 2, attached it to an older model Mercedes, and tried to dislodge the machine but failed.
“In this case, the suspect managed to pull out a part of the machine, the front, out but failed to completely pull the machine out of it’s frame.
“Also, it’s next to a KFC so at the time, people were already walking by so he couldn’t get away with it,” he said on the sidelines of the Selangor police Hari Raya open house at the Surau Al-Walid today.
After attempting to pry out the machine for five minutes, the suspect fled the scene in the Mercedes.
The incident occurred at 5.30am today and the identity of the suspect is still unknown as he was wearing a ski mask. However, Shafien said that police believe him to be a Malay man in his early 30s.
Police could not determine from the surveillance footage whether the suspect had any accomplice.
Police are currently investigating the case under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which covers “house-trespass or housebreaking” which carries a jail term of five years or a fine.
