SUBANG JAYA, May 19 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today downplayed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s warning to Pakatan Harapan parties not to trust the former prime minister’s agenda.
“That is his opinion, he is entitled to it,” Dr Mahathir told reporters here, after attending a forum organised by the National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam).
In a letter from prison, the PKR de facto leader told his party and Pakatan Harapan allies not to dedicate themselves to Dr Mahathir’s “Save Malaysia” campaign to depose the prime minister, warning that it was driven by a self-serving purpose.
The jailed opposition leader reminded Pakatan Harapan that their goal was to introduce meaningful reforms in the country, and pointed out that Dr Mahathir’s bid to oust Datuk Seri Najib Razak contained none.
Anwar also expressed disappointment at his allies for not defending him against Dr Mahathir’s continued criticism.
Opposition leaders are beginning to waver over the movement between former political rivals in which there is little common ground save for a shared desire to remove Najib from office.
