SEREMBAN, Feb 18 — A policeman was sentenced to four years’ jail and fined RM70,000 by the Sessions Court here today on two counts of accepting bribe, involving RM1,500, eight years ago.

Judge Kamarudin Kamsun handed down the sentence on Lance Corporal Rosli Mohamed Din after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution case.

Rosli, 55, who is with the Rantau police station, was charged with accepting bribe of RM1,000 from one V. Sashitaran at a restaurant in Jalan Besar Rantau on Aug 19, 2008.

The money was received though one G. Kunaselan as an inducement for him (Rosli) to not take action against two foreigners who were working without a valid permit at a farm in Kampung Solok Rantau.

The bribe was also an inducement for Rosli to not take action against Kunaseelan for harbouring the workers concerned.

He was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM50,000, in default a year’s jail, for the offence.

Rosli, was also sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM20,000, in default eight years’ jail, on another charge with accepting RM500 from one Sashitaran Kumar at the same place on Sept 15, 2008.

The bribe was as an inducement for Rosli to protect Sashitaran’s workers from any action by the police.

He was ordered to serve the sentence concurrently.

However, Kamarudin allowed a stay of the sentence pending following a request by Rosli’s lawyer, Badrul Munir Mohd Bukhari, to appeal against the conviction and sentence at the High Court.

The court then raised Rosli’s bail by RM17,000 and ordered him to report to the nearest police station on the first of every month. — Bernama
