KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 ― Military veteran Mohd Ali Baharom was charged today with committing sedition over a racially-charged speech that he made on Sunday night before a bloody brawl in front of Low Yat Plaza.
According to Sin Chew Daily, Mohd Ali, who is popularly known as “Ali Tinju”, pleaded not guilty.
The court fixed RM8,000 as the bail amount and July 30 as the next court date.
The Star Online also reported that Mohd Ali was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 in the Sessions Court here presided by judge Jagjit Singh Bant Singh.
The news portal said Mohd Ali was charged for allegedly making this statement: “Okay, we want justice. This is the dignity of Malays, not because one Chinese boy attacked many Malays. This is Malay land. Unite, and attack the DAP Chinese who are rude.”
On Tuesday, police arrested the Armed Forces Veterans Association president for a sedition probe over his speech.
On Monday, a video went viral of a man ― believed to be Mohd Ali ― addressing a group of people gathered in front of the popular information technology (IT) mall.
In the video, said the gathering in front of Low Yat was to seek justice and to uphold the dignity of Malay youths.
He also proclaimed the country to be “bumi Melayu” or Malay land, and that the Malays must be united to stand against “rude DAP Chinese” in the country.
