KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Police have arrested four handphone salesmen to assist in investigations into the bloody Sunday brawl at Low Yat Plaza, bringing the total number of those nabbed to 22.
According to The Star Online, the police also picked up 30 people from the mall earlier today to help identify those believed responsible for the violence. They were later released.
"Four other retailers were arrested to facilitate investigations into a riot incident," KL CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad was quoted saying by the news portal this evening.
The news portal also reported that the police caused a bit of a commotion at the tech mall earlier today when they arrived to search for witnesses of the incident.
In a separate report, The Star Online said an auxiliary policeman has also been detained.
The report said that the 22-year-old man from Ampang was picked up at 1am this morning from a Felda building on Jalan Persiaran KLCC.
Earlier today, police confirmed that they arrested Armed Forces Veterans Association President Mohd Ali Baharom for allegedly making a racially-charged speech prior to the Sunday riot in front of Low Yat Plaza.
The riot was believed to have been triggered by an earlier theft at the mall that saw a youth and his accomplice apprehended and sent to the police.
Friends of the suspected thief reportedly reacted by returning to the mall the same night and thrashing the place, causing an estimated RM70,000 in damages.
The commotion turned into a demonstration on Sunday night after several messages spread on social media resulted in scores of people gathering outside the mall reportedly to demand retribution.
Several scuffles broke out after midnight outside the mall, leaving several people injured — with three of them being journalists.
