KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Police have released two drivers they arrested over the deadly crash on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (Duke) that killed a couple and their infant.
According to The Star on its website, the two include the 35-year-old woman who was driving one of the six Perodua Myvis said to be racing on the highway before the accident and which crashed into the Mitsubishi Pajero the family had been travelling in.
Kuala Lumpur staff officer for Traffic Investigation and Regulation Deputy Supt Markandan Subramaniam told The Star that the woman and the other unidentified driver have been questioned over the incident and were now out on police bail.
“We are looking into all angles to ascertain the extent of negligence,” Markandan was quoted as saying in the report.
Shortly before their release, a surveillance video from a tollbooth surfaced online and showed what is believed to be both the Pajero and the six speeding Myvis moments before the crash.
Public anger over the incident that killed a family of three and left two children orphaned continues to seethe online.
The woman is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death from reckless and dangerous driving, and may be liable for between two and 10 years’ jail upon conviction.
In the incident yesterday, Fairuz Nizam Husain, 35, his wife Nova Safitri Azahari, 25, and their infant daughter Nur Firuza Annissa were driving along the Duke in their Pajero when a Myvi crashed into them at 1.05am.
Fairuz reportedly died on the spot, while his wife and child died on the way to the Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
They left behind two other daughters Nur Firuza Amira, 7, and Nur Firuza Akila, 3.
