KOTA BAHARU, March 21 — The police will deploy 1,020 personnel to ensure the safety of voters at Chempaka state by-election tomorrow.

Kelantan Police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said today, the personnel will start work as early as 5.30am tomorrow at nine polling centres fixed by the Election Commission (EC).

“Voters need not worry as the police are always present at polling centres. If they have a problem, inform the police personnel on duty,” he told a press conference at Markas Batalion 8, Pasukan Gerakan Am, Pengkalan Chepa, here.

The nine polling centres are at SK Pulau Gajah, SK Sabak, SK Parang Puting, SK Kem, SK Che Deris, SK Seri Chempaka, SMK Badang, SMK Pengkalan Chepa and SMA Tengku Amalin A'ishah Putri Chempaka.

A total of 20,390 voters in Chempaka constituency can cast their votes in the five-cornered by-election.

PAS candidate Ahmad Fathan Mahmood@Mahamad,42,is being chalenged by independents Izzat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary,48, Sharif Mahmood, 59, Fadzillah Hussin,55, and Aslah Mamat,64. — Bernama
