KUANTAN, Feb 27 — An Indonesian woman was today sentenced to death by hanging, for trafficking in three kilograms of methamphetamine, two years ago.
Ajeng Yulia, 21, a cashier from Jakarta was found guilty by the High Court here, of committing the offence at Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport at 11pm on November 10, 2013.
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman held that the defence had failed to cast any reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.
He said the court rejected Ajeng’s sworn statement that she was unaware of the drugs inside the baggage which she was asked to carry from New Delhi by someone called Stanley.
“The accused said she got to know Stanley, a Nigerian, in New Delhi. How is it that a cashier who has no fixed income can come to New Delhi to meet Stanley, purportedly to learn English before travelling to Malaysia alone?
“The accused mentioned Stanley, but did not provide the man’s telephone number or his address,” noted the judge in his ruling.
Ajeng appeared calm when the judge meted out the sentence.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Radzi Shah Abdul Razak represented the Royal Customs Department while Ajeng was represented by counsel Aina Azemi. — Bernama
