KOTA KINABALU, Feb 8 ― Police arrested five activists who are allegedly linked to the Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia (SSKM) in Lahad Datu.
According to news portal The Star Online, they were detained at about 4pm yesterday as they were gathering signatures for a petition asking for state rights to be restored.
The five, detained under the Sedition Act, were waiting for a magistrate to turn up as police were seeking to remand them further.
“These five people have been detained overnight. We’ll wait for the order from a magistrate this evening,” Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said when contacted.
Neither Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman nor Lahad Datu police chief Assist Comm Hamza Ahmad could be reached for comments on the latest arrest.
Last Sunday, nine people, aged between 24 and 50, were arrested while soliciting signatures for a petition seeking the secession of Sabah at the weekly tamu (open market) in Tuaran about 10am.
