KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 ― A Malaysian teacher jailed in Sweden for hitting her children, will be released today after serving her 14-month sentence at the Hinseberg women's prison in Frovi, Sweden.

Malay tabloid Harian Metro reported that Shalwati Norshal, the mother of four, will be freed at 8.30am, Swedish time (2.30pm Malaysian time).

On March 28, The Star Online reported that Shalwati was sentenced to 14 months’ jail, while her husband and the father of the children, Azizul Raheem Awalluddin was given a 10-month prison sentence.

The couple were charged with beating their four children — aged between seven and 14 years — at their home in Stockholm between September 15, 2010, and December 17, 2013.

Shalwati and Azizul, a Tourism Malaysia director, were also ordered to pay damages to their children.

In March, The Star Online reported that the Solna District Court in Stockholm found Shalwati, a secondary school teacher, guilty of committing gross violation of the integrity of the couple’s two older children.

She was also found guilty of assaulting their two younger sons, while Azizul was convicted of committing gross violation of the integrity of their eldest son and of assaulting their daughter and second son.

He was however, acquitted of charges involving his youngest son.

The court had also reduced the couple's initial jail term and both of them were required to serve only one-third of their sentences.

Azizul returned to Malaysia in July after serving his sentence for three months from March 28, while the couple’s four children returned to Malaysia on January 31 and are now under the care of their aunt and uncle in Kelantan.
