KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 — Police said they have wrapped up investigations on the man who shot two arrows at a dog in Balakong, but said they doubt any charges would be brought against him.

According to The Star Online, Kajang district police chief Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the man had claimed that he shot the dog out in self defence as the creature was trying to enter his house.

“He did it to protect his children,” the OCPD was reported as saying.

ACP Abdul Rashid noted that the case had provoked public anger but said it was up to the deputy public prosecutor to decide whether to press charges.

The case has been categorised as mischief under Section 429 of the Penal Code, which stipulates: “Whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless, an elephant, camel, horse, mule, buffalo, bull, cow or ox, whatever may be the value thereof, or any other animal of the value of twenty-five ringgit or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years, or with fine, or with both.”

The man is also being investigated under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for carrying an offensive weapon in public spaces.

The dog, which the Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) animal welfare group has named “Brianna”, has reportedly died of tick fever.

In a Facebook posting today, MDDB said they were informed of Brianna’s death by the veterinarian in Subang Jaya that was treating the dog for the injuries sustained from the bow-and-arrow attack on Tuesday.

“We received some very heart breaking news just now. Brianna is no more. She succumbed to her severe tick fever and we are truly shattered upon hearing the news.

“The vet tried everything possible — she was just too weak and too traumatised,” the group said on its page.
