KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — The police will launch ‘Ops Warta’ in June to track down traffic offenders in an effort to collect summons totaling RM570 million over the past 10 years.

Bukit Aman Traffic Police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said it involved 1.9 million outstanding warrants of arrest against hardcore offenders who have more than one warrant.

“This move is to ensure that traffic rules are always respected in this country and to prevent accidents and deaths on our roads,” he told reporters, here today.

Mohd Fuad said that 4.25 million warrants of arrest were issued over the past 10 years.

Some 308,160 inspections were made in 9,743 traffic operations while 7,583 individuals were arrested under ‘Ops Warta’ since September 2013.

The first three months of this year saw 114,115 accidents recorded, 1,512 of them fatal accidents that claimed 1,623 lives.

Motorcyclists were the largest group with 1,014 deaths followed by car users (332), pedestrians (125) lorry users (47) 4WD vehicle users (31), cyclists (30), bus users (10), van users (7) and users of other vehicles (27). — Bernama
