KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — PKR’s Rafizi Ramli today became the latest opposition figure to be investigated for sedition, after authorities set their sights on the Pandan MP over a book chronicling Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II saga.
The PKR strategy director told The Malay Mail Online that the probe is based on police reports lodged by pro-Umno supporters against him for allegedly instigating hatred against the judiciary.
“The book is a chronicle of the second sodomy trial, which began in 2011 up to the recent Court of Appeal verdict on the matter,” explained Rafizi.
The book titled “Reformasi 2.0: Fakta Kes Anwar Ibrahim” (Reforms 2.0: The Facts of Anwar Ibrahim’s Case), was launched at the outset of the Kajang by-election in February.
The book was sold at RM5 at Pakatan Rakyat ceramahs nationwide and over 20,000 copies have been bought, said Rafizi.
“In the book I stated the facts of the case as opposed to what was reported in the media,” he said.
These include details disclosed outside the court proceedings, such as mention of “sperm samples” that he said were never raised during the trial but were used to shape public perception in what he dubbed “media propaganda.”
Anwar was sentenced to five-year jail term on March 7, after the Court of Appeal overturned his second sodomy acquittal, ruling that the trial judge erred in rejecting DNA evidence adduced.
On January 9, 2012, Anwar was acquitted of allegedly sodomising Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at the Desa Damansara condominium on June 26, 2008.
The conviction coincidentally disqualified Anwar from his announced bid to contest the Kajang by-election that was eventually won by his wife, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Ismail. It also prevented him from vying to be president of PKR in its ongoing polls.
The police will record Rafizi’s statement at his service centre in his parliamentary constituency at 5pm.
“It has become quite a routine,” added Rafizi, referring a string of legal action against him.
Rafizi’s investigation for sedition comes amid scrutiny over the frequency the colonial era law is used by the authorities against opposition lawmakers and activists, despite Putrajaya’s repeated pledges to do away with the law.
Last week, Seputeh DAP MP Teresa Kok was charged under the same Act for a satirical Chinese New Year “Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014” video taking a swipe at the national issues such as the Sulu invasion in Sabah last year and the education system.
