PETALING JAYA, May 12 —  PKR today declared its election process a “success,” despite the allegations that are forcing it to hold fresh voting at 27 branches and delay announcing the results indefinitely.

The party was originally to announce the polls outcome tomorrow, but earlier postponed this following weekly allegations of delays and voter manipulation since polling first started on April 26 last month.

“Yes, it is a success!” PKR election director Datuk Johari Abdul told reporters at a news conference here.

Evidence of this “success”, according to the Sungai Petani MP was the fact that 10,000 members had contested for various positions within the party.

“So many people want to be candidates... and we are the first party in the country to conduct a one-man, one-vote system,” he said.

Johari said the party was in “no hurry” to conduct fresh polls for the 27 branches, and that legally PKR had until November to conclude its polls.

“If it takes more than a month or two, why not?

“We are not in a hurry, we want to make sure all the hiccups are resolved,” he added.

The 27 branches that will have to undergo fresh polls are Hulu Langat, Sabak Bernam, Sungai Besar, Subang, Klang, Selayang, Kota Raja, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Kapar, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kemaman, Dungun, Paya Besar, Nibong Tebal, Jerantut, Batang Sadong, Kapit, Pengerang, Tenggara,Tenom, Keningau, Bukit Katil, Tawau, Papar and Sg Petani.

PKR has a total of 198 branches nationwide.

The party has also received 331 official complaints against several party candidates, their campaigns and the electoral process. One hundred complaints have been found to have merit.

Johari also revealed that “close to 100” members who are contesting in this election will be disqualified for breaching party election rules and guidelines.

PKR has played down allegations of vote manipulation and polling delays in the party’s internal polls, with Johari calling it manageable “hiccups.”

PKR’s last party elections in 2010 was mired with allegations of vote fraud and corruption, which led to some leaders leaving the party in protest.
