KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — The cause of death of 62-year-old S. Savariamal whose body was found down an elevator shaft at Block 11 of the Seri Selangor Flats last Thursday remains a mystery.

Her son, Prakash Suppiah, 30, said doctors at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) told him that his mother did not sustain any broken bones from the fall.

Her death certificate stated the cause as “chest injury due to fall from high” (sic).

However, the post-mortem report will only be ready next month.

Savariamal was cremated at the Cheras crematorium on Friday.

When met by The Malay Mail yesterday, Prakash said his mother was last seen by her colleagues on Monday night.

Contractors from Kuala Lumpur City Hall arrived at the flats on Tuesday after receiving complaints from residents about noises coming from the elevator.

When they inspected the elevator, they could not find anything wrong and told the residents the noises were probably “ghostly” in nature.

On Thursday, the stench became worse and a complaint was lodged with the police and Fire and Rescue Department.

Upon arrival at 7pm, a thorough check was conducted and Savariamal’s body was discovered at 10.25pm.

The elevator was shut down for further investigations.

Savariamal had been living on the 16th floor of Block 11 since 2008 and worked as a sweeper there.

Prakash, who lives with his family in Penang, received a call from the police on Thursday night informing him about Savariamal’s death.

The body was identified the next morning.

“My mother suffered from high-blood pressure, diabetes and heart-blockage, but she had no problems working,” Prakash said.

“Ask anyone and they would know her. It really puzzles me how she fell down the shaft,” he added.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib refused to comment on the incident until he gets the full report from the police.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said: “Let the police complete their investigations. We will not rule out foul play.”

Last Saturday, Prakash’s uncle Gopal Perumal was stuck in the adjacent elevator with three other residents for three hours before help arrived.

During the incident, an elderly woman passed out.
