KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — Former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is strongly tipped to announce his bid to contest the party’s No 1 post after he was ousted in October 2010.
Party sources revealed the former transport minister will probably form a pairing with current vice-president Gan Ping Siew to contest for the presidency and deputy post in the December party polls.
Ong had qualified to contest after he was elected as a Kubang Pasu divisional delegate to the annual general meeting on December 22.
With that ticket, the former Pandan MP is hoping to make a comeback. He is expected to make the announcement at a hotel today.
“I will reveal everything during the press conference,” he said when contacted. However, he declined to confirm which position he would be going for.
He also alleged that someone, claiming to be his personal assistant, had sent out text messages to several party members asking them for support during the party polls.
“I am sorry that certain people have already started such tactics even before I make any announcement on my candidacy.
“I wish to clarify here that I did not send out such messages. In fact, I do not even have an assistant now.”
It was previously reported party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek was wooing Ong and Gan to join his camp and form a 1-2 partnership with him to take on the challenge posed by deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong.
After the 13th general election, Dr Chua had said he would not defend the presidency due to the party’s poor showing in the elections.
However, there have been signs that Dr Chua may go back on his word and defend his post.
One clear act was by trying to censure Liow during the recent extraordinary general meeting but he failed in his bid.
