KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — Former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat today announced he would contest the presidency in the party elections next month.

With a campaign slogan of 'Unite! Restore the Lost Dignity', he believed he was still able to contribute and help rebuild the party.

He said he had received “optimistic response” from the party's grassroot members over his decision.

Speaking at a news conference here today, he said: “I am announcing my willingness to offer myself to contest the presidency during the MCA elections on December 21.

“After the MCA suffered a huge loss in the 13th General Election, I hear the clarion call to shoulder the responsibility together, to revive the party and redeem its dignity in the eyes of the people.

Ong has also sought support from party delegates.

The decision appears to be an attempt to redeem his pride which was bruised about three years ago, after being defeated by his then deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek in a three-cornered fight.

Ong served as MCA president from October 2008 to March 2010. After the defeat, he has been lying low.

That period, he said, had allowed him to do some soul-searching and carry out ground work in connecting with the grassroots despite not having a proper platform or getting help from the party.

“The last three years have given me sufficient time to think. I have realised my weaknesses and shortcomings.”

Besides trying to engage with current party leaders, Ong, who was recently elected a Kubang Pasu divisional delegate, said he had also reached out to other delegates and community leaders on his intention to make a comeback. — Bernama
