KUCHING, Sept 13 — Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud tonight launched a landmark to symbolise 50 years of Sarawak’s Independence in Malaysia at Petra Jaya here.

The landmark, in the shape of a giant hand with a round pole on top, is at the centre of the Bulatan Datuk Patinggi Abang Abdillah which is near the old Sarawak State Assembly building.

A statement issued by North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) stated that the landmark was built to remind the present and future generation of the difficulties and hardship faced by their forefathers in freeing Sarawak from the colonials.

The hand symbolises the solid support of the people of Sarawak, while the pole structure which forms the core of the landmark symbolises the strong economy and political stability in the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, State Secretary Tan Sri Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani and members of the state cabinet were among those present to watch the unveiling of the landmark. — Bernama
