KOTA BARU, Sept 11 — The Kelantan Legislative Assembly today convened a special session to strongly condemn the Egyptian military’s recent violent attacks and mass killings of peaceful demonstrators across that country.
It also called for an immediate stop to the killings and for the ousted democratically elected President Dr Mohamed Mursi to be returned to power.
The assembly also called on all quarters in the conflict in Egypt to accept the democratic system and the rule of law.
The resolution was contained in a motion tabled by Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakub at the special session, convened at Kota Darul Naim, here.
Following a debate, the resolution was approved unanimously by the members of the assembly.
In tabling the motion, Ahmad described the action of the Egyptian military as a brutality and called for an immediate stop to the “despicable and barbaric act”.
“Those who were killed are almost all our brothers and sisters. The brutality should be stopped immediately,” he said.
He also said that the Kelantan government and people expressed their concern for the plight of the Egyptian people and regretted the atrocities committed by the military.
He proposed that the Malaysian government assume the role of mediator and take positive steps to help stop the brutality and restore democracy in that country.
“I wish to state that the Malaysian government should influence countries of the Middle East which support Gen Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi, who has killed thousands of Egyptians, to not provide any funds as a means of stopping the bloodshed in Egypt,” he said.
Ahmad also suggested that government agencies and non-governmental organisations cooperate to raise funds to help lift the Egyptian people out of their misery.
Several members of the assembly who spoke during the debate expressed support for the resolution, saying the brutality against the people of Egypt was inhumane.
Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad (BN-Kok Lanas) said though Malaysia adopted a policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other countries, the brutality against the Egyptians had to be condemned and stopped immediately.
Expressing his sympathy for the people of Egypt, he said Malaysia had a long-standing relationship with the Arab country, including in the field of education whereby many Malaysians pursued higher education there. Datuk Husam Musa (PAS-Salor) said democracy should be restored in Egypt immediately for the return of peace and human rights.
The assembly adjourned sine die after passing the resolution. — Bernama
