KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — Datuk Seri G. Palanivel will remain as the MIC president for three more years after no one challenged him in the party presidential polls.

Palanivel won the post by default as he was the sole candidate nominated today.

Last week, speculation that Palanivel’s deputy Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam would challenge him for the top post was laid to rest.

It was reported that Palanivel would step down by March 2016, allowing Subramaniam to take his place.

“The prime minister advised us to avert a contest and we have decided to abide by his decision,” Palanivel had said last Thursday, referring to an August 18 meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“I believe that there are no strong challengers for the president and deputy president posts,” he had also said then.
