JUNE 15 — I refer to Kelantan Umno chair Mustapa Mohd’s accusation that DAP’s offer to build mosques is an insult to Muslims.
There is not a single verse in the Qur’an nor saying of the Prophet that can support such an intolerant statement.
In fact, Islamic history and tradition is filled with examples of harmonious relationship between non-Muslims and Muslims.
The first Muslims who fled from Mecca had sought refuge from a Christian king in Habsyah (Ethiopia). Going by the logic of this Umno leader’s rhetoric, that too would be an insult.
Islamic tradition is rich with examples of how one should treat non-Muslims justly and with fairness. One is not allowed to seek a fight with non-Muslims if they are peaceful with you.
An offer to build a mosque is a peaceful and friendly offer. There is no basis in Islam to turn down or worse still insult a non-Muslim who makes such an offer.
It is obvious that Umno and Mustapa Mohd are using this issue to play politics.
It is part of Umno’s underhand tactic of branding DAP as unfriendly to Malays and Muslims.
We call upon Umno to stop their constant attempt to divide Malaysians along the lines of religion and race.
