YANGON, Dec 15 ― Defending champion Malaysia’s 36-0 thrashing of Cambodia yesterday in the women’s hockey competition at the Myamar SEA Games, which is a new world record, has got the national squad all fired up to go the distance.

Team captain Nadia Abdul Rahman said the result was due to great teamwork but cautioned that they cannot take things for granted as Cambodia were minnows in the sport.

“Yes, it was a big success for us, at one time we were beaten 18-0 by Australia. That served as good wake up call for us,” she told reporters here today.

Meanwhile, Noor Hasliza Md Ali, who scored seven of the goals, said the number even surprised herself.

She said she was looking forward to the match against Singapore tomorrow who would be a “different kettle of fish.”

Prior to this, the world record was held by Argentina who defeated Peru 26-0 at the South American Women’s Hockey Champions in Santiago on March 23, 2003.

Thailand matched the record when they defetated Cambodia by the same margin at this Games.

After Singapore, Malaysia will complete the preliminary round with matches against Thailand on Tuesday and Indonesia on Thursday. ― Bernama
