SINGAPORE, April 2 — Singapore has established the Homefront Crisis Ministerial Committee to coordinate the nation’s response towards the ongoing global energy crisis, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

In a video message addressing Singaporeans, Wong said the committee will be chaired by the Coordinating Minister for National Security, K Shanmugam with Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong as adviser.

“The team has begun work. It is updating existing contingency plans and developing new ones in  light of these unprecedented developments.

“First, we are taking active steps to strengthen our energy and supply chain resilience,” he said on Thursday.

According to the Prime Minister, the Singapore government will also enhance existing measures under Budget 2026 and bring some forward to provide earlier relief, in view of the spike in oil prices and the uncertain outlook.

“We will cushion the immediate impact on households and businesses as the support measures announced in this year’s budget are rolled out.

“They include additional U-Save rebates to help households cope with higher electricity costs,” he said, adding that targeted support for severely affected sectors will also be provided.

In the meantime, Wong called on Singaporeans to stand together, act responsibly and be prepared as the global situation remains highly uncertain amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia.

He emphasised that businesses and households should take practical steps to conserve energy and reduce unnecessary consumption and waste.

“The government will support you, but our collective response will be far stronger if each of us plays our part too,” he noted. — Bernama
