LOS ANGELES, Oct 18 — Eight months after scoring success at the 89th Academy Awards with Moonlight, Barry Jenkins is back behind the camera filming his third movie, If Beale Street Could Talk, the director announced on Twitter.
Barry Jenkins has just started filming his latest movie, telling the story of Tish, a 19-year old girl who falls in love with a sculptor called Fonny. She becomes pregnant and the pair decide to marry, but her husband-to-be is sent to prison, accused of raping a young Puerto Rican woman. Tish then faces a race against time to prove Fonny’s innocence before the baby is born.
This love story is based on the book If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin, the author who recently inspired Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro. Canadian actor Stephan James, who played the athlete Jessie Owens in Race, and Kiki Layne (Chicago Med) take the lead roles.
Jenkins rose to prominence last year with his critically acclaimed drama Moonlight, which won three Oscars in February: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. In the meantime, the filmmaker also directed an episode of the Netflix series Dear White People. — AFP-Relaxnews
