KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Share prices on Bursa Malaysia remained higher as at midafternoon today, with continuous buying support in heavyweights led by CIMB Group, dealers said.

They said buying interest was also spurred by improved sentiments across the region.

Thirty-two minutes after the afternoon session resumed, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 15.83 points or almost one per cent to 1,739.63.

CIMB Group, which accounted for 2.2 points to the benchmark index’s rise, gained 16 sen to RM7.35.

On the regional front, Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 344.42 points to 14,205.23, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng surged 103.88 points to 22,725.10 and Singapore’s Straits Times advanced 36.05 points to 3,084.40.

Back to the local bourse, the Finance Index surged 176.739 points to 16,359.47, the Plantation Index rose 28.67 points to 8,182.37 and the Industrial Index perked 45.92 points to 2,946.99.

The FBM Emas Index garnered 108.5 points to 12,065.86, the FBM100 Index was 105.989 points higher at 11,823.02, the FBM 70 Index perked 116.37 points to 13,697.48 and the FBM Ace rose 31.44 points to 5,007.29.

Advancers led decliners by 475 to 176, with 232 counters unchanged, 681 untraded and 14 suspended.

Trading was moderate with turnover at 788.821 million shares worth RM754.258 million.  

Among actives, Instacom Group-WB rose 10.5 sen to 11 sen, Asia Media Group was unchanged at 12 sen and Green Packet-warrants edged up 4.5 sen to 13.5 sen.

Gainers were Nestle, which gained 88 sen to RM67.88, followed by British American Tobacco, garnering 82 sen to RM62.28 and AEON Credit rose 54 sen to RM15.68.

Of the heavyweights, Maybank increased six sen to RM10.06, Axiata rose three sen to RM6.75, Sime Darby added two sen to RM9.42 and Petronas Chemicals was 10 sen higher at RM6.60. — Bernama
