KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) reportedly revealed that the number of construction projects awarded last year dropped by 6.9 per cent from 13,399 projects in 2021 to 12,474 projects.

However, its chief executive Datuk Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid told New Straits Times that last year’s projects were valued at RM140.5 billion in total, an increase from RM129.8 billion in 2021.

“The number of projects decreased only in 2020 because of the movement control order (MCO) due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he was quoted by the English newspaper.

He said the value of projects in 2020 was the lowest at RM91.3 billion compared with RM113.4 billion in 2019.

‘Asri said there are still ongoing and new construction projects as industry players demand more workers.

“The government had recently approved entry for 995,396 foreign workers as of March 14 for all sectors, namely construction, services, manufacturing, agriculture, quarrying and mining and plantation.

“This shows that there is still demand for workers to carry out ongoing and new construction projects,” he said.
