KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 — Malaysia’s Covid-19 cases stayed below the 3,000 mark today, with another 2,842 new cases recorded in the last 24-hour period.

This was slightly higher than yesterday's 2,690 cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country since the start of the pandemic to 2,769,886.

“There are 252 individuals in the intensive care unit (196 Covid-19 positive). As for the 134 individuals requiring the breathing aid, 82 of them have been confirmed positive for Covid-19.

“There have also been two new clusters detected bringing the total number of clusters to 6,139 with 200 of them still active,” Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.

“From the 2,842 cases today 47 per cent are in Category 3, 4 and 5 while the rest are in Category 1 and 2.”

As for flood mitigation efforts Dr Noor Hisham said there are 198 temporary relief centres (PPS) operating in seven states (Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Sabah).

As of today, 15 positive cases were discovered at the PPS with no new cases reported today. The total number of positive infections thus far from the flood victims is 465 cases.

Apart from that, the ministry found 102 cases of acute respiratory infections, 26 individuals with skin disease and five cases of acute gastroenteritis.
