KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad reminded Malaysians to practice tolerance to maintain the multi racial harmony in the country.

“The people of Malaysia come from a background of various ethnicities, language, religion, and culture and are all accustomed to celebrating religious festivities together.

“This is special to Malaysia, where it is actually the manifestation of freedom of religion practiced here,” he said in his Wesak Day message today.

Dr Mahathir said this freedom we enjoy is not limited to allow religious practices, but also freedom in language, culture, and traditional practices.

“However, the freedom we enjoy must be maintained and defended with responsibility, to avoid it being contaminated by extreme actions that could threaten the interracial relationships and harmony,” he warned.

Dr Mahathir stressed that even though the government had recently changed, with Pakatan Harapan taking over, law and order will be upheld while the rights of the people will be maintained.

“On Wesak Day we are reminded of the founder of Buddhism, Gautama Buddha, but the real message is the fight to do good to everyone around us.

“Hopefully with our effort, the country will return to become a prosperous nation.

“Me and my wife take this opportunity to wish all Malaysians Happy Wesak day,” the statement read.
