KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — Demolition works of the inactive Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau toll plazas have begun and will be completed by the end of March, says PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS).

In a statement, PLUS managing director Datuk Azman Ismail said the demolition works were being implemented in stages according to the approved work schedule.

They have also made preparations for road diversions and are in the midst of bringing in the necessary equipment to the demolition site.

“Pre-demolition works such as the transfer of toll equipment, signages and other assets commenced on January,22 and ended on February 8.

“While traffic management works and lane closures started at Batu Tiga Toll Plaza yesterday, Sungai Rasau will see a similar workflow tonight,” the statement read.

He further explained that there are four stages of the removal procedure and they are currently in the first and second stages which involve asset mobilisation and traffic management.

The next stage will see the toll plaza being torn down starting from the middle roof structure, roadmarking and installation of road barriers for the purpose of aligning all major routes.

Finally, the toll plaza will be physically demolished from the sides, in both directions before undergoing final inspection.

The highway concessionaire also advised all drivers passing through the toll plaza to be more careful and to slow down their vehicles.

“There are a lot of warning signs available at the site especially those alerting drivers of speed limits, prohibited cuts, diversions ahead and so forth, to warn about 150,000 drivers passing the area daily,” he said.

In addition, PLUS has also installed light safety cones on location to allow drivers to know the lane position.

“Street lights (high mast) are also put up at night to assist the road users,” he said.

On Monday, two people were killed after their car slammed into a concrete pillar at the toll plaza just after midnight.

The accident was the second fatal crash at the location, following another on Jan 15 in which two people were also killed and another injured.
