IPOH, Feb 19 ― A divorced couple claimed trial at the Sessions Court here with extorting a man over a sexually explicit video.

Muhammad Kasim A. Zamzani, 24, and Noraniza Jelani, 30, were jointly charged with extorting Yap Ing Choon at the state Road Transport Department (RTD) office here three years ago.

The two were accused of jointly committing the offences June 12, June 17 and June 18, 2015 using a telephone number registered to Noraniza.

They allegedly threatened to report Yap to the police for sending the video to Noraniza, a factory worker.

The couple allegedly demanded RM1,000, RM800 and RM5,000 to be transferred to the woman's bank account.

Muhammad Kasim was also charged separately with the committing same offence on June 30, 2015 at the same location.

The jobless Muhammad Kasim allegedly demanded that Yap deposit RM10,000 to him and Noraniza in installments.

All the charges were proffered under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which was read together with the Section 34 of the same Act.

If found guilty, the duo could face up to 10 years of imprisonment, fine, caning, or to any two combinations.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Rais Imran Hamid prosecuted and the couple were unrepresented.

Rais proposed that bail be set at RM10,000 for each charge, but Muhammad Kasim asked for this to be lowered as he was unemployed while Noraniza needed to care for her one-year-old child.

Sessions Judge S. Indra Nehru then set bail at RM20,000 for Noraniza with one surety while and RM29,000 for Muhammad Kasim with two sureties

Indira then set February 26 for case mention and to allow the couple to appoint lawyers.
