KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 — An Umno lawmaker criticised today a former minister who said that many tragedies happened during the Najib administration, after a cycling accident that killed eight teenagers.

Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Seri Irmohizam Ibrahim said it was insensitive to link such tragedies to the administration of a certain leader.

“It has nothing to do with the current government that is rather alert and acute to every issue related to the people’s welfare,” Irmohizam said in a statement.

Former Information Minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin tweeted, in a couple of tweets over the past few days, that several tragedies have occurred during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s tenure, such as the disappearance and shooting down of airplanes, the Lahad Datu incursion, kidnappings, the killing of a world leader, a fire at a hospital and the latest, the deaths of eight teenage cyclists who were mowed down by a car yesterday morning.

In a blog post later, Zainuddin clarified that he was not accusing Najib of causing tragedies, but that he was merely stating a “historical fact” that the events had happened during his tenure.
