KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) gave out appointments letters today to 20 new representatives aboard two of its five independent oversight panels.
In a statement, the MACC said 13 were appointed as members of the Negotiation and Corruption Prevention Panel (PPPR) while the remaining seven were appointed to its Operations Evaluation Panel (PPO).
The members will serve in both independent bodies for a year beginning today.
A source told Malay Mail Online that none of the past panel members were retained.
“All these are new appointments as these seats have been vacant for some time and there was no replacement or retainment,” said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The MACC statement said the new members consisted of leaders from professional bodies, government affiliated companies, academics and former high-ranking civil servants.
Former director-general of Public Service Tan Sri Ismail Adam will head the panel of PPPR while former Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Zaleha binti Zahari will chair PPO.
The other PPPR members are: former Malaysian Islamic Development Department director-general Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh; former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer Datuk Dr Mohd Sham Mohd Sani; Asia e-University professor Tan Sri Dr T. Marimuthu; The Store Corporation Bhd’s managing director Tan Sri Tang Yeam Soon; former Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment secretary-general Datuk V. Danapalan; founder of investment firm Naim Holdings Datuk Hasmi Hasnan; Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia lecturer Datin Dr Amla Mohd Salleh; lawyer Datuk Baljit Singh Sidhu; Utusan Melayu group editor-in-chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Ishak; filmmaker Datuk Yusof Haslam Khan; former PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa; and Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences dean Professor Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom.
Among the notable panellists on board the PPO committee are former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and former Inland Revenue Board deputy chief executive (compliance) Datuk Dr Siti Mariam Che Ayub.
Others in the committee are: Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd chairman Datuk Azizan Abdul Rahman; lawyer Datuk Selva Mookiah; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer Professor Datuk Dr Mohammad Agus Yusoff; and Universiti Teknologi MARA’sProfessor Dr Yap Bee Wah.
The Complaints Committee, the Corruption Preventions Board of Advisors and the Special Corruption Committee are three other independent bodies that were created since the inception of MACC to provide a check and balance mechanism.
