PUTRAJAYA, Aug 9 — The achievement gap between rural and urban schools for the UPSR and SPM examinations has shrunk by 31.6 per cent and 18 per cent respectively since the implementation of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, according to its 2015 annual report.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the gap can be further narrowed with a strengthening of focus on solving accessibility issues in remote areas.
“The main difference between rural and urban schools is the physical aspect. If you compare a school in Kuala Lumpur with a school in Gua Musang or a remote village in Sarawak, the distance needed to travel to get to it from home is very different,” he told reporters after launching the report.
“When we talk about the physical aspect, we’re not just talking about the shape of the school, but the connectivity.”
